2022년은 고은문화재단이 한국 사진예술과 지역 문화의 발전을 위해 설립한 고은사진미술관 15주년을 맞는 해입니다. 그동안 보내주신 관심과 사랑에 깊이 감사드립니다.

고은문화재단은 그간의 성과를 바탕으로 BMW 동성모터스와 함께 또 하나의 사진미술관인 랄프깁슨사진미술관(Gibson/Goeun Museum of Photography)을 개관합니다. BMW는 범세계적으로 문화예술 분야에 큰 지원을 제공하고 있는 기업이며, BMW 동성모터스 역시 부산을 중심으로 다양한 문화적 후원 활동을 펼쳐오고 있습니다. 새 미술관은 세계적 사진가 랄프 깁슨(Ralph Gibson)의 작품들을 소장하고 다양한 기획의 전시를 통해 그 대표작을 연중 감상할 수 있는 기회를 제공하게 될 것입니다.

초현실주의의 거장으로 불리는 랄프 깁슨은 로버트 프랭크와 윌리엄 클라인으로부터 시작된 20세기 현대사진의 맥락을 잇는 미국의 대표적 사진가입니다. 현실의 일부를 기하학적 구성과 절묘한 균형으로 포착한 이미지를 통해 초현실적 세계를 추구하는 그의 스타일은 독보적입니다.

지난 2014년 고은사진미술관은 1960년대 초창기로부터 2000년대까지에 이르는 그의 대표작들을 빈티지 프린트로 전시함으로써 거장의 작품 세계를 직접 접하는 기회를 사진 애호가들과 함께 나눈 바 있습니다. 고은사진미술관은 그 후에도 랄프 깁슨과 교류를 이어가며 사진과 문화에 대한 가치를 공유해왔고, 그 결과로 이 거장을 기념하는 미술관을 부산에 설립하게 되었습니다.

랄프깁슨사진미술관 개관에 즈음하여 고은사진미술관도 그의 전시를 동시에 개최함으로써 출범을 축하하고자 합니다. 보여드릴 작품은 1971년 랄프 깁슨이 사진가로서 처음 프랑스를 방문한 후 2022년까지 카메라에 담은 이미지들로 구성된 Salon Littéraire 시리즈입니다.

처음 프랑스에서 작품활동을 시작했을 때 랄프 깁슨은 프랑스 감독 알랭 레네의 영화와 마르그리트 뒤라스의 소설에 빠져있었다고 합니다. 이후 미국인으로서 프랑스에서 일하는 동안 그는 자신이 단순히 그곳을 방문한 이방인이 아니라 면면하게 이어져 오는 위대한 전통의 일부라는 것을 깨닫고 자부심을 느끼게 됩니다. “프랑스에서는 모든 것이 프랑스적이다…” 라고 말하는 그는 프랑스 시각문화의 힘에 깊이 매혹되었습니다. 그로부터 수십 년 동안 그는 프랑스 각지를 여행하였고, 그 풍성한 문화와 철학을 접하며 떠오른 영감들을 이미지로 표현하였습니다. 그 결과가 Salon Littéraire 시리즈입니다.

프랑스는 고은문화재단 김형수 이사장과 랄프 깁슨이 문화와 예술을 넘어 세상과 삶에 대한 생각을 공유함으로써 깊은 우의를 나눌 수 있게 해준 매개체였습니다. 20여 년간 부산프랑스명예영사로서 프랑스와 특별한 관계를 이어온 김형수 이사장과 랄프 깁슨은 두 사람 모두 프랑스 정부가 수여하는 레종 도뇌르 훈장의 수훈자이기도 합니다.

랄프 깁슨의 사진은 시각적으로 표현된 시(詩)입니다. 그는 우리에게 프랑스와 파리의 도시 풍경이나 건축물들의 아름다움을 넘어서, 랄프 깁슨의 눈으로 그곳을 함께 응시하고 그가 경험한 것을 공유하기를 원합니다. 초현실주의의 거장 랄프 깁슨은 말을 아낍니다. 설명을 더하는 순간 이미지에 접근하는 길이 협소해져 버린다는 것이 그의 생각입니다. 흑백사진과 컬러사진이 서로 대응하는 딥틱(diptych) 방식의 이번 시리즈에서도 랄프 깁슨은 함축적이고 상징적인 소제목들만 던져준 채 침묵 속에서 초현실의 세계로 인도하고 있습니다.

고은문화재단과 BMW 동성모터스는 앞으로 두 미술관의 시너지를 통해 이 거장의 작품을 상시적으로 여러분들과 향유할 뿐만 아니라, 한국의 젊은 사진가들이 랄프 깁슨과 함께 사진을 이야기하는 다양한 기회를 만들어 갈 것입니다. 이러한 활동이 문화예술 애호가들께 큰 기쁨을 드리고 한국 사진이 발전하는 초석이 되기를 희망합니다.

The year of 2022 marks the 15^th anniversary of GoEun Museum of Photography, which was founded by GoEun Foundation for the development of Korean photographic art and local culture. We deeply appreciate the interest and affection you have shown for the museum

Based on its past achievements, GoEun Foundation opens Gibson/GoEun Museum of Photography, another museum dedicated to photography, along with BMW Dongsung Motors. BMW is a global company providing major support to culture and arts throughout the world. BMW Dongsung Motors is also engaged in various cultural support activities with a focus on the city of Busan. The new museum has a collection of the works by Ralph Gibson, a renowned global photographer, and it will display his major works all year round through a variety of exhibitions.

Gibson, known as a master of surrealistic photography, is a key figure in the American modern photography following in the footsteps of Robert Frank and William Klein. He pursues the surrealistic world through images that show parts of reality, captured based on geometric configurations and superb balance, with an unparalleled style.

In 2014, GoEun Museum of Photography exhibited his major works produced between his early years in the 1960s and the 2000s in vintage prints to share with photography enthusiasts an opportunity to have a firsthand encounter with the master photographer’s artistic world. Since then, the museum has kept in touch with Gibson, sharing ideas and values on photography and culture; this relationship has finally led us to establish a museum commemorating him in Busan.

On the occasion of the inauguration of Gibson/Goeun Museum of Photography, GoEun Museum of Photography is also holding his exhibition simultaneously to celebrate the event. We will be showing the Salon Littéraire series comprising images that Ralph Gibson photographed from 1971, when he visited France for the first time as a photographer, to 2022.

At the time he first started to take pictures in France, Gibson says that he was swooning over Alain Renasis’ film and Marguerite Duras’ novel. Then, living and working in France as an American, he realized that he was not just a stranger visiting the country but a part of a large and enduring tradition and came to feel a strong sense of pride. Gibson, who says, “In France everything is French…”, was deeply fascinated by the French visual culture. He traveled various parts of the country for several decades and expressed numerous inspirations from its rich culture and philosophies in photographic images. The outcome has culminated in the Salon Littéraire series.

France is a country that brought President HyungSoo KIM of GoEun Foundation and Ralph Gibson together to share their ideas, not only on culture and arts but also on the world and life, as well as a deep friendship. Both President Kim, who has maintained a special relationship with the country as the Honorary Consul of France in Busan for over 20 years, and Gibson are the recipients of the Legion d’Honneur from the French government.  

Ralph Gibson’s photographs are poems that are visually represented. He wants us to go beyond the beauty of the urban landscapes and buildings in Paris and other parts of France and to view them in his eyes and share what he experienced. Gibson, a master surrealist, spares his words. He thinks that adding words to images narrows the range of the photograph’s overall dimension. In this series of diptych works where black-and-white and color photographs are displayed side by side, the photographer silently leads the viewers to the surreal world merely giving them implicit and symbolic subtitles.

In the future, GoEun Foundation and BMW Dongsung Motors will continue to present the master photographer’s works all year round based on the synergy of the two museums and offer opportunities for young Korean photographers to discuss photography with Ralph Gibson. We sincerely hope that these events will be appreciated by numerous devotees of culture and arts and lay the foundation for further development of Korean photography.
