《망대: 고요의 시간》

마이클 케나(Michael Kenna, 1953-)는 세계적으로 널리 알려진 흑백 풍경 사진작가이다.  작가는 50년이 넘는 시간 동안 아날로그 인화 방식을 고수하며, 세계 각지의 풍경을 미니멀한 조형 언어로 담아왔다. 그가 담은 풍경은 현실의 장면을 있는 그대로 묘사하기보다 흑백을 통한 암시와 해석의 여지를 남긴다. 색채의 정보가 사라진 자리에는 빛과 그림자, 여백과 형태, 침묵과 상상의 공간이 남아 관람자가 각자의 상상력으로 장면을 완성하게 만든다. 

“저는 흑백 사진이 컬러 사진보다 더 조용하고 신비롭게 느껴집니다. 저에게 흑백의 미묘함은 각 관람자의 상상력을 자극하여 마음속 눈으로 이미지를 완성하게 만듭니다.”

 이번 전시는 케나가 2005년부터 2024년까지 약 20년간 한국 동해안과 남해안, 서해안 일부 지역을 촬영한 《망대》 연작 중, 2025년 강릉시립미술관에 기증된 작품을 선보인다. 미술관은 지난 2023년 이 연작 가운데 일부를 구입하였고, 이후 작가로부터 57점을 기증받아 총 60점을 소장하게 되었다. 이번 전시는 그 기증의 의미를 나누기 위해 마련되었다.

 《망대》 연작 속 고성, 양양, 강릉, 동해, 삼척 등지의 망대와 해안 풍경은 장시간 노출과 흑백이라는 작가의 언어를 통해 고요하고 낯선 장면으로 전환된다. 소리와 움직임이 사라진 풍경은 시간의 흔적을 남긴 채 정지해 있으며, 유기적인 자연과 인공 구조물이 나란히 놓여 우리에게 익숙한 해안선을 다시 바라보게 한다.

  작가는 자신을 ‘세상의 신비롭고 아름다운 단편(vignettes)을 전달하는 메신저’라 말하며, 이 사진들이 누구나 자유롭게 걸어 들어와 잠시 머물다 갈 수 있는 풍경이 되기를 희망한다. 이번 전시가 각자의 감각으로 우리 주변의 풍경을 바라보고, ‘고요의 시간’ 속에 잠시 머무르며 평온과 사색의 시간을 갖는 계기가 되기를 바란다.

 Michael Kenna (1953–) is a world-renowned black-and-white landscape photographer. For over 50 years, he has adhered to analog printing techniques and has captured landscapes from around the world using a minimalist visual language. Rather than depicting reality as it is, his photographs leave room for suggestion and interpretation through black and white. Where color disappears, light and shadow, negative space and form, silence and the space of imagination remain—allowing viewers to complete each scene with their own imagination.

“I also find black and white photographs to be quieter and more mysterious than those made in colour. For me, the subtlety of black and white inspires the imagination of the individual viewer to complete the picture in the mind's eye.”

 This exhibition features works from Kenna’s “Watchtowers” series, photographed over a period of nearly 20 years—from 2005 to 2024—along the East Coast, as well as parts of the South and West Coasts of Korea. The museum purchased some works from this series in 2023, and the following year, the artist donated 57 more, bringing the total collection to 60 works. This exhibition was organized to share the meaning of this donation with our citizens.

 The watchtowers and coastal landscapes of Goseong, Yangyang, Gangneung, Donghae, and Samcheok are transformed into tranquil and unfamiliar scenes through the artist’s language of long exposure and black-and-white photography. These landscapes, where sound and movement have disappeared, stand still, imbued with traces of time, while organic nature and man-made structures stand side by side, prompting viewers to see familiar coastlines anew.

  The artist describes himself as a messenger who delivers “mysterious and beautiful vignettes of the world,” and hopes that these photographs will become landscapes where anyone can freely step in, linger for a while, and then leave. We hope that this exhibition will be an opportunity for visitors to view the landscapes around them from their own perspectives, to pause for a moment in a “time of stillness,” and to find a sense of peace and reflection.

2010년초에 삼청동 공근혜 갤러리에서 처음 보았던 마이클 케냐의 사진.

이후에 마이클 케냐의 사진이라고하면 항상 공근혜 갤러리에서 볼 수 있는 줄 알았는데

강릉시립미술관에서 구입 및 기증을 받아서 마이클 케냐의 사진을 소장하게 된 것 같습니다.

이제 서울 삼청동 뿐만 아니라 강릉에서도 마이클 케냐의 사진을 볼 수 있겠군요.
